A close call
Today my puppy almost got himself killed.
Dad had wandered off outside and rung the doorbell on his return. Fez, being his usual self got uber excited and rushed to the front door.
We have been teaching Fez to ’stay’ so that he wouldn’t rush out the door whenever we opened it. We didn’t factor in another dog walking past on the other side of the road…
Fez shot out onto the footpath, and I skipped a heartbeart, yelling after him to stop. Then he started making his way across the road, in front of the traffic… FARRRK! My worst nightmare for my pup!
We live on Wellington Road, one of the main roads that link the airport with Wellington city – it’s a busy, busy road. Not only that, we’re just down from a corner where the speed zone is 70km/h.
Thankfully, the car coming down the road was alert and slowed down when they saw this pup heading on to the road. Fez slowed down too, but then decided to continue, making the car stop all together directly in front of Fez. I screamed at him and luckily he stopped long enough for me to catch him.
That was one drama that a seven month pregnant woman could have done without!

OMG, scary! That’s the worst thing about dogs, you can train them up so well, but when another dog is around they don’t listen to anyone. And dog fights are bloody scry to try to break up.
At least he didn’t actually make it across the other side after surviving the traffic!

it’s the scariest thing! My dog had his leg run over by a car when he was a pup when his lead broke, but it could have been so much worse!

It sure was!
Aw poor pup of yours :( I’m quite paranoid about the lead breaking too – Fez is still learning to take walks and likes to tug a lot.
