Abby Update at 13 Months

Friday, December 24th, 2010

So this post is a couple of days early but I am not intending to do anything online for a few days while we are celebrating Christmas and the summer with our extended family.

I can’t believe this is Abby’s second Christmas! At least this year she’s not a newborn so will be able to actually enjoy the presents, food and company like everyone else (unlike her first Christmas where she just slept).

Abby got to open some of her Chrissie presents early, one of them being a paddling pool gifted from a friend. It was so nice last Saturday that I thought she might like a paddle on the deck. And she did – lots.

She lurrrves water, playing and drinking it too (at least it was just plain tap water and not chlorinated public pool water).

Mum and dad got Abby a play oven for Christmas, which she was allowed to open last week also. She’s not quite figured out how to turn the hob dials though, but can press the “timer” button for the oven so it ticks and dings.

The random stuff in my oven are done!

Then she spends the rest of the time putting things in and taking things out of the oven. She also pretends to fry up what I like to think is bacon and eggs for mum’s breakfast.

She’s such a clever cookie. She’s walking more by herself now. She can climb on, and backwards to get off, the sofa/bed or out the back door (another thing I have to watch out for!)

She’s learnt to say “ball” and “shoe” but they come out as “brr” and “shuhr”. (In the video below, at 1:04 I ask her “What is that?” and she starts to say “ball” but I correct her – I then notice that Fez had dropped his ball at her feet. Way to confuse the poor child.)

She’s starting to repeat what we say so I have to watch my potty mouth around her just in case!

Have a merry Christmas and a great break from the norm everyone!

It’s a boy!

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Yes, there will be a little brother for Abby to play with next year. Hooray – one of each!

Boy Baby

Boy Baby's profile

I had my 20 week scan today (although I’m actually 19 weeks 3 days). Baby was being difficult to scan because he kept moving. He’s quite an active fellow, more so than I remember Abby being at the same stage. At the 12 week scan he turned a somersault, and at this one he was constantly turning in all directions and moving his limbs – at one stage he even managed a wave.

The stats are looking like this bub may be bigger than Abby, which is not something I’m looking forward to when the time comes!

I don’t have the picture where it shows the baby has a scrotum and penis (giggle, and ew – there’s a penis inside me all the time!). I was surprised about this because the lady had paused the image on-screen to show us. I expected to find an image on our CD because we had the one showing Abby’s gender. Oh well, we still have a boy!

Now to think of some names. And maybe buy a new house with a white picket fence.

I blame the Internet

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

So this is what happens when you forget about your hotdogs.

Yummy

Yummy

Ok, to be fair, I was letting them simmer because the husband was going to be late for dinner (yes, this is dinner tonight). I put the lid on because I thought it would keep them nicer for longer. That was the mistake. The slow simmer turned into a boil and after dragging myself away from my laptop, they had suffered more than a little burstage.

The Internet is terrible for things like that.

I completely failed at cooking pears for my baby once because I was busy on the ‘net. It can also be blamed for my baby eating things she shouldn’t be, like dog biscuits. The Internet has also kept me up later than I should be, causing me to lose sleep and have a crap morning.

It has also made me lose money by making me buy stuff.

Really, the Internet has shortened my life – all those hours spent exploring it when I should be doing other things, like cooking and sleeping… And maybe raising my baby too.

Silly things in silly places

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

Yesterday I made 54 pretzels as requested by my husband for an Octoberfest thing they had at work. It took me about two hours to make three batches of Alton Brown’s Soft Pretzels. They were needed them before 4pm, so I planned it with plenty of time to spare. Come 2:30, I had them all cooked, cooled, packed and ready to go. But I couldn’t find my keys.

Took me an hour of frantic searching before I gave up. At 3:30, the husband said to call a taxi and have him deliver them. I had one last search under couches, beds and even the fridge (as I now have a sneaky baby that likes to hide things) before I called the taxi.

Murphy’s Law – 5 minutes after the taxi came and went, I grabbed my drink on the kitchen table and spied my keys. They were on the table all along. But they were inside a jar. Why..? Ah! I remember now…

When my parents were visiting, my mum had, for some reason, decided that the best way to store a brand new unopened sachet of curry paste was to put it inside a jar, then in the fridge. My mum is great for “putting things away”. She also put pens in the candle holder, and rubberbands around jars in the pantry. To her, that’s tidying up. To me, that’s making it impossible for me to find my stuff. She’s a funny lady. Anyway, after they had gone home we found this sachet inside a jar inside the fridge and had a bit of a laugh. Then the husband sarcastically put my car keys inside the jar so I could protect them from the harsh elements of our kitchen environment. Of course, we forgot about this and hence I had no idea where my keys were when I needed them, and had no reason to look inside a jar for them.

Just goes to prove that you shouldn’t put silly things in silly places. We also shoud have a spare car key.
